Purpose:
To compare the efficacy of intravitreal injection of Levofloxacin and Dexametason versus Ceftazidim , Vancomycin and Dexamethasone in the treatment of endophthalmitis in experimental models.
Methods:
Thirty albino rabbits were divided into three groups as Group A (Dexamethason + Levofloxacin), Group B (Ceftazedim + Vancomycin + Dexamethason) and Group C (Normal Saline). Two days after Staphylococcus epidermidis intravitreal inoculation, rabbits were examined for detection of the endophthalmitis and intravitreal injections were performed. Three and seven days after the injection, rabbits were examined by slit lamp and indirect ophthalmoscopy. Vitreous sampling was performed at the same time and the samples were sent for culture.
Results:
After seventy-two hours, colony count was recorded. Mean bacterial colonies was more than 1.1× 10 6 for Group C and 1.07 × 10 6 for the two other groups. Seven days after antibiotic injection, mean bacterial colony count was 84.5 ± 89.8 in group A and B and 6.2 × 10 6 ± 1.8× 10 5 in group C. The difference between Group A and B did not reach statistical significance.
Conclusion:
Both antibiotic regimen treatments were effective in treatment of induced bacterial endophthalmitis in rabbit models.
