Purpose:
to compare the visual acuity measured by Bina digital Tumbling E chart (made in Iran) with Yang digital chart (made in Italy) in healthy subjects and patients with various eye diseases.
Methods:
This study was carried out on 200 participants (healthy n=40; Glaucoma n=40; retinal disorders, n=40; post-lasik n=40; corneal n=40) at Rasoul Akram hospital. The mean age was 44.28 years. Their BCVA were determined by Tumbling E chart at 4 meters. In each group, half of the subjects were first tested with one chart and the rest were tested with the other chart.
Results:
The mean Log MAR measured by Bina and Yang charts were, 0.277 + 0.012, 0.280 +0.012 respectively. Paired t-test shows no statistically significant difference between two tests (P=0.721). Spearman correlation coefficient, for two tests was 0.947 (P<0.001), indicating a strong positive correlation. Spearman correlation coefficients in different groups were: corneal transplantation (0.967), glaucoma (0.933), retinal disorders (0.923), post-lasik (0.756) and healthy subjects (0.5).
Conclusion:
The two digital Tumbling E acuity chart, act similarly at different levels of acuity in different disorders. A better design of the optotype in the lower lines the Bina chart is recommended.
