Purpose:
|
The National Eye Institute reports that low vision affects 3.3 million Americans 40 years and older; this number is projected to reach 5.5 million by 2020. Depression is common in people with vision impairment. Prevalence rate for depression among older vision impaired patients is from 25% to 45% compare to less than 20% among those with normal vision. The objective of this study was to explore depression in low vision patients.

Methods:

It was a cross-sectional study with convenient sampling (n=30) of patients with low vision problems that attend to the low vision clinic. After confirmation low vision diagnosis referred to psychiatric clinic for evaluation depression by Beck Depression scale. Analysis was performed with statistical package spss 19 software.

Results:

According to Beck depression scale, from the 30 low vision patients, 40% were normal (12cases), 20% were mild depression (6cases), 16.7% were moderate depression(5cases) ,23,3% had severe depression(7cases).
Mean age in low vision was( 45±24.6) and 66.7% were male and 33.3% were female.

Conclusion:

Higher rate of depression show in visually impaired patients . With on time treatments of depression in these groups, they can look forward to a happier tomorrow.
