Purpose:
To evaluate visual, contrast sensitivity outcomes and aberrations after Transepithelial Photorefractive Keratectomy (Trans-PRK) in high myopic eyes.
Methods:
Seventeen eyes with high myopia (Subjective refraction≤-6) were recruited in a prospective study at Bina Eye Hospital, Tehran, Iran, from July 2011 to June 2013. All of cases were underwent Trans-PRK surgery by a single expert refractive surgeon using SCHWIND AMARIS 500 laser. Follow-up visits were performed up to 9 months post-operation. Visual acuity, contrast sensitivity function and aberration changes were evaluated.
Results:
Visual outcomes improved in all the eyes. The mean of UDVA improved significantly from 0.14 to 1.01 (P value?0.001) and BSCVA improved significantly from 0.74 to 1.09 (P value?0.001). Mean Trefoil aberrations increased (-0.08 to -0.14, P value=0.01) but it was not clinically significant and mean coma aberrations changes were not statistically significant. The mean of photopic contrast sensitivity improved significantly from 2.27 to 1.42 (P value?0.001) while the mean of mesopic contrast sensitivity did not show any remarkable change.
Conclusion:
This study shows that Trans-PRK mode using SCHWIND AMARIS is an effective procedure in high myopic eyes. This procedure could improve visual acuity and quality of vision while it wouldn’t change aberrations significantly.
