Purpose:
To compare the Schirmer I test values between 23 and 20-gauge vitrectomy systems.
Methods:
In this prospective, comparative study, all patients who underwent pars plana vitrectomy for posterior segment diseases were included. Patients with preoperative Schirmer values <10 mm were excluded. Schirmer I test values were recorded before and one and 3 months after vitrectomy.
Results:
18 eyes in the 23-gauge group and 34 eyes in the 20-gauge group were studied. The age and sex of the patients and baseline Schirmer I values were similar between the 2 groups. In both groups, postoperative Schirmer I values were significantly decreased at one and 3 months visits. The changes in Schirmer I measurements was not significantly different between the 2 groups at 1 month, however, at 3 months it was marginally significant (a mean decrease of 3.3±3.5 mm in 23 gauge and 5.9±4.5mm in 20 gauge group, P=0.053). At 3 months, the proportion of eyes with dry eye defined as Schirmer values <10 mm in 23 gauge group (16.6%) was significantly less than 20 gauge group (52.1%).
Conclusion:
Although both 20 and 23-gauge vitrectomy decease the Schirmer test value postoperatively, the value is less affected by 23-gauge vitrectomy at 3 months follow up.
