Purpose:
To offer suggestions to improve the cataract surgery training program in ophthalmology residents
Methods:
This retrospective study was performed on the published articles about the educational curriculum of ophthalmology residents between 2000 and 2012. In these articles, the impact of the educational curriculum on cataract surgery with regard to its important complications including posterior capsular rupture (PCR) and vitreous loss (VL) was evaluated.
Results:
During these years, PCR and VL had a decreasing trend in the US and European countries. The most important reason for this decrease was effect changes that were made in the educational curriculum. However, the rate of the complications is still high in Asian countries including Iran and Turkey.
Conclusion:
The authors believe that wet lab learning, portfolio preparation, research activities, evidence-based practice, and active learning should receive appropriate attention in order to improve the educational curriculum of ophthalmology residents.
