Purpose:
to compare analgesic effects of topical anesthesia with tetracaine eye drop and intravenous fentanyl and remifentanil
Methods:
75 patients with ages between 40 and 80 years old , were enrolled in this study. patients were randomly divided into three groups of 25 cases. The first group were received analgesia using intravenous fentanyl 1.5 mic/kg and second group were received intravenous remifentanil 1 mic/kg. the third group were received only topical anesthesia with tetracaine 0.5 % ophthalmic drop. Intensity of pain was evaluated using numerical pain scale by a blinded observer. Vital sign were monitored and recorded.
Results:
the patients in topical anesthesia group suffer more pain than patients received analgesic and difference was significant (P < 0.05 ). Remifentanil and fentanyl perfectly suppress the pain associated with needle insertion and doesn’t cause clinically significant adverse cardiovascular , respiratory and other side effects . pain associated with bevacizumab injection between fentanyl and remifentanil was of insignificant difference (P > 0.05 )
Conclusion:
remifentanil is choice drug for analgesia in intravitreal bevacizumab injection
