Purpose:
To investigate the corneal biomechanical changes in patients with thyroid Eye Disease (TED).
Methods:
fifty seven healthy subjects and seventy five patients with thyroid orbitopathy were included. Corneal biomechanical parameters were measured using an ocular response analyzer (ORA). Central corneal thickness (CCT) was measured with an ultrasonic pachymeter. The differences in ORA parameters between study and control group participants were analyzed using Student's t test
Results:
The mean corneal hysteresis (CH) values were 10.45±0.21 mmHg and 9.01±0.20 mmHg in healthy subjects and TED patients respectively and this difference was statistically significant (p<0.001). Mean corneal resistance factor (CRF) values were 10.42±0.29 mmHg, 10.05±0.16 mmHg in healthy subjects and TED patients respectively and the difference was not statistically significant (P=0.25). There was no significant difference in CCT between the control eyes and patients with TED. The intraocular pressure (IOP) measured either with Goldman applantation tonometry or with ORA was significantly higher in TED patients compared to normal subjects (P<0.001).
Conclusion:
While CCT and CRF remained unchanged in patients with thyroid orbitopathy, an increase in IOP level and a decrease in CH would be predictable in these patients
