Purpose:
|
To determine sensitivity and specificity of diabetic retinopathy screening by general physician using direct ophthalmoscope.
|
|
Methods:
|
8 general physician (GP), 4 ophthalmologist, 1 retina specialist and 120 diabetic patients were included. Group A included 4 GP that underwent education for signs and stages of diabetic retinopathy, group B included 4 GP who did not received any education and group C included 4 ophthalmologist. Fundoscopy with direct ophthalmoscope for each patient of 100 patients was done by one of physicians of each group. Fundoscopy with direct ophthalmoscope for 20 patients was done by all physician of each group. Finally all patients were underwent examination by retina specialist using slit lamp and indirect ophthalmoscope.

Results:
|
Sensitivity and specificity for diabetic retinopathy diagnosis in group A was 59% and 75.6%, in group B was 50.9% and 86.5% and in group C was 75% and 85% respectively. Sensitivity and specificity for severe diabetic retinopathy diagnosis in group A was 70% and 93.2%, in group B was 57.1% and 96% and in group C was 64.5% and 96.9% respectively.

Conclusion:
|
With sufficient education can increase the sensitivity and specificity of diabetic retinopathy diagnosis by general physician using direct ophthalmoscope.
