Purpose:
To report descriptive statistics of aphakic children fitted with corneal RGP lenses in a tertiary Eye Hospital from 2011-2013.
Methods:
Retrospective, case series
aphakic children referred to Farabi Eye Hospital Contact Lens Clinic – Tehran, Iran- from 20 March 2011 to 20 March 2013
Results:
71 eyes of 66 aphakic children were fitted. 21 patients were aged less than one year. Mean age was 5.65 years (SD: 3.946; range > 1- 16 age). The background diseases were congenital cataract in 76.1% (54 eyes), trauma in 19.7% (14 eyes), and PHPV in 4.2% (3 eyes).
8 children suffered from bilateral aphakia. 62 % (44 patients) had no optical correction before, 33.8% used to wear aphakic eye glasses and one patient had used RGP lens before. Mean spherical error was +16.20 D (SD: 3.628; range: +23.0 - +8.0 D). Mean cylinder was – 2.12 D (SD: 1.65; range: -9.0 - -1 D). Mean SE was +15.50 D (SD: 3.94; Range: +6.0 - + 15.50 D).
The dispensed RGP lenses was of Boston XO material with 10- 11 mm diameter and in base curve ranges of 7.0 mm to 8.8 mm (Mean 7.95; SD: 0.48).
Conclusion:
We started fitting aphakic children with RGP from 2009, the referred patients increased steadily thereafter and now we are fitting almost all referred aphakic children – either congenital or traumatic – with these lenses. A few cases – not included in this series – need to be fitted with other types of contact lenses such as soft or miniscleral ones.
