Purpose:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of one-site phacotrabeculectomy without peripheral iridectomy in glaucoma patients with coexistent cataract who underwent this procedure
Methods:
A retrospective study of case records of patients who had one site phacotrabeculectomy without peripheral iridectomy was performed. We collected pre- and postoperative data in all patients including visual acuity, intraocular pressure (IOP) and the number of anti-glaucoma medications. Surgical success was defined as the final IOP less than 21 mmHg and at least a 20% reduction from preoperative IOP and no major complication requiring a return to operating room. Also complications which occurred during follow up of the patients were recorded.
Results:
Forty eight eyes of 48 patients were recruited into the study. Mean (SD) age of the patients was 70.1(8.8) years. The mean (SD) value of IOP before surgery was 27.1(6.4), and it decreased to 13.4(6), 14.7(4.2), 15.9(3.8) and 15.6(3.2) at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after surgery (P<0.001). Mean (SD) number of anti-glaucoma medications decreased from 2.6(1.2) preoperatively to 0.7(1.4) at last follow-up visit(P< 0.001). Mean logMAR visual acuity improved from preoperative level of 1.1(20/276 Snellen equivalent ) to 0.6 (20/80 Snellen equivalent) at last follow-up visit. At final follow-up visit the procedure was successful in 80% of patients.
Conclusion:
Present study showed that one-site sutureless tunnel phacotrabeculectomy without peripheral iridectomy leads to a significant reduction in IOP and helps to improve visual acuity. Also this procedures had a few complication based on our results.
