Purpose:
To evaluate the effect of different methods of orbital decompression in patients with thyroid eye disease in a 10 years period.
Methods:
In this retrospective study, based on a questionnaire, the recorded information of 35 patients who underwent orbital decompression surgery has been analysed.
Results:
The mean age of patients was 36.2 ± 12.9 years. The median time interval from diagnosis of thyroid abnormality to the time of surgery was 24 months (Range= 4- 120 months). Most surgery in these patients (36 patients -83%)was surgical decompression of both the medial and inferior orbital walls combined with orbital fat decompression. Before surgery, most patients (11 patients-45.8%) had a history of corticosteroid therapy with iodine therapy. Most of patients(21 patients-84.0%), who underwent surgery, had a history of hyperthyroidism. In one-year follow-up period, most Prevalent complementary surgery performed on these patients was mullerectomy. (13 patients - 38.9%).Second operation was performed within 4.5 months (Range=1 to 12 months)from the primary operation. The mean of the best corrected visual acuity before surgery and at one year follow-ups were not statisticaly significantly different. The Mean amount of proptosis preoperatively was 26 mm( range= 13 to 35mm).It reached to 21 mm(range 15 -27 mm) in 3 months follow up(P<0.001) and 20 mm (range 14-24 mm) in one-year follow-up (P<0.01).
Conclusion:
Orbital decompression is an effective surgery to improve exophthalmos in TRIO and its effect increase with time.
