Purpose:
|
To compare the success rate of pulled stent intubation with pushed stent intubation in children with complex congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNLDO)
|

Methods:
|
Eighty-eight eyes with complex CNLDO were treated with pulled stent intubation (n=47) or pushed stent intubation (n=41) in a single, academic center. Outcome measures included clinical signs plus a parental history of residual symptoms at 6 months after surgery.

Results:
|
Tubes were removed at a mean of 2.57 ±0.5 months after surgery. The mean follow-up after surgery was 9.0 months (range, 6.5-13 months). Complete resolution was achieved in 35 of 47 eyes (74.5%; 95% CI, 59.4%-85.6%) after pulled stent compared with 25 of 41 eyes (61.0%; 95% CI, 44.5%-75.4%) after pushed stent (Chi-square, P=0.17; RR=1.2; 95% CI, 0.9-1.6). Partial improvements was achieved in 5 of 47 eyes (10.6 %; 95% CI, 4%- 23.9%) after pulled stent compared with 10 of 41 eyes (24.4%; 95% CI, 12.9%-40.6%) after pushed stent (Chi-square, P=0.08; RR=0.4; 95% CI, 0.1-1.1).

Conclusion:
|
In our patients with complex CNLDO or after failed probing, treatment with a pulled stent and pushed stent intubation alleviate the clinical signs and symptoms of CNLDO in a similar percentage of patients (without a statistically significant difference).
