Purpose:
To distinguish differences in retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness and peripapillary total retinal (TR) volume between eyes with papilledema, pseudopapilledema, and normal findings.
Methods:
42 eyes with mild to moderate papilledema, 37 eyes with congenitally crowded optic nerves, and 34 normal eyes underwent neuro-ophthalmic examination, automated visual field testing, and fundus photography. Circular OCT scans surrounding the optic disc and peripapillary TR volume measurements (in 2.2 mm and 3.4 mm rings) were performed in each eye of patients and subjects.
Results:
A statistically significant difference was found in mean RNFL thickness between both groups of patients with papilledema and pseudopapilledema and normal subjects. Although 2.2 mm ring volume between papilledema and pseudopapilledema was not different in temporal and nasal quadrants, 3.4 mm ring peripapillary TR volumes were different between papilledema and pseudopapilledema. The 3.4 mm ring peripapillary TR volume values were not different between normal and pseudopapilledema eyes.
Conclusion:
3.4 mm ring peripapillary TR volumes might be useful in differentiating papilledema from pseudopapilledema.
