Purpose:
To assess the correlation between optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fluorescein angiography (FA) findings in diabetic macular edema (DME)
Methods:
The study was performed on 51 patients and 97 eyes. All patients with CSME at the first visit were included in the study. All subjects underwent OCT and FA imaging on same day. ETDRS guidelines were used for classifying some FA parameters.
Results:
There was a significant correlation between number of micro-aneurysms (MA) and retinal thicknesses in each subfield but in central 300 µm. Ccentral foveal, parafoveal and perifoveal thicknesses were correlated with the leakage parameters of FA.
67% have cystic DME in OCT. An important association between the location of cysts and number of MA and severity of leakage in central and peripheral regions was found. Also we found a significant correlation between foveal cyst size and severity of leakage in 6 central subfields (p value= 0.009, r= 0.27)
We found statistically significant correlation between LOGMAR of Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA) and retinal thickness but not leakage severity and aneurisms in FA.
Conclusion:
There was an acceptable correlation between findings of OCT and FA in DME patients.
