Purpose:
To compare preoperative and postoperative endothelial characteristics of keratoconic corneas were treated by CXL
Methods:
50 consecutive eyes of 43 patients (23 male and 20 female) with progressive keratoconus t hat were treated by corneal collagen cross linking (CXL) were evaluated. Preoperative and postoperative endothelial cell morphology was analyzed by Specular Microscopy (Tomey Corp, Japan). Postoperative follow-up examination was done 12 months after CXL. The endothelial cell morphology analysis included: cell density (cells/mm2), polymegethism (coefficient of variation, CV) and pleomorphism (% of 6 sided cells)
Results:
Preoperatively, mean endothelial cell density determined by specular microscopy was 2743.43 ± 233.54 cells/mm2, percentage of hexogonal cells was 53.90 ± 11.78 %, and the coefficient of variation (CV) of endothelial cell area was 38.77 ± 10.33 %. These values were not statistically significant differences postoperatively (all P > .05)
The mean cell count decreased from 2743.43 ± 233.54 cells/mm2 to 2724.05 ± 232.09 cells/mm2 (p=.976). The calculated exponential cell loss rate preoperative to postoperatively was 0.67%, that is similar to normal age-related cell loss of 0.6% per year healthy individuals.
Conclusion:
according to our results CXL had not affected on endothelial cell density (morphology) and endothelium showed a decrease in cell density similar to normal age-related cell loss per year in healthy individuals.
