Purpose:
To evaluate the existence of any sexual difference in corneal sensitivity.
Methods:
Corneal sensitivity of 130 volunteer subjects (77 females and 53 males) was measured using Cochet-Bonnet aesthesiometer by one examiner. Measurements were done on five corneal regions of central, nasal, inferior, temporal and superior.
Results:
There was not a significant difference of corneal sensitivity in central (t=0.174, P=0.862) and nasal (t=1.4, P=0.163) cornea. The test indicated a significant difference in corneal sensitivity for inferior (t=2.25, P=0.026), temporal (t=2.48, P=0.014) and superior (t=2.7, P=0.008) corneal regions.
Conclusion:
Except for central and Nasal region, corneal sensitivity is significantly higher in men compared to women in other three peripheral tested regions of inferior, temporal and superior.
