Purpose:
Measuring blood sugar has always been one of the basic laboratory data in ophthalmic surgery, and widely used in the diagnosis and therapeutic evaluation. Because of its crucial effect in management of the patients, measurement systems should be of a highest accuracy level, to prevent medical errors and subsequent disastrous events.
Methods:
50 patients with planned strabism surgery, were recruited this prospective cross-sectional research. In the operating room, after Intra Venus-line fixation and before premedication, capillary blood glucose of the both upper and lower limbs were measured in perioperative period by sampling from their fingertips and reading by ACCU-CHEK glucometer and the results were recorded.
Results:
These data indicate that even in rapid blood glucose changes during operation, there is no difference between upper and lower limb capillary blood sugar level which is measured by ACCUCHEK.
Conclusion:
Finally it is recommended to consider this study as a pilot one as there were no similar study to make a statistically reliable sample size for our study. This study can be considered as a primary study for further ones with more accurate sample size and more specifically designed to examine alternate sites sampling in changing blood glucose levels.
