Purpose:
Evaluating the possible complications of keratorefractive surgeries is vital. Decreased corneal sensation is among the most questioned objects before surgery .
Methods:
200 patients were evaluated about corneal sensation by Cochet-Bonnett esthesiometer. These evaluations were repeated after surgery by Allegretto (all wave right) EyeQ400 Alcon device .
Patients were divided into two groups with less and more than 5 diopters myopia.
Results:
Corneal sensation before, one , three and six months after surgery is as follow : 1.59±0.77, 1.39± 0.76 , 1.66±0.73 and 1.06 ±0.76.
Corneal sensation before surgery has a significant difference with one and three months postop ( p<0.01 and P=0.18 respectively). Also corneal sensation in one month after surgery is significantly different from three and six months sensation.
Between two groups of patients with less and higher than -5 myopia there was no significant difference.
Conclusion:
Corneal sensation decrease within one month after surgery and return to preop level by month three and this condition is stable until six months. Altering the corneal nerves during the surgery is the proposed cause of corneal sensation decline in the early post op period and with corneal healing in later stages, sensation returns to normal level.
