Purpose:
: To evaluate the effect of oral calcium dobesilate (Doxium) on macular thickness in diabetic retinopathy and clinically significant macular edema (CSME)
Methods:
Overall, 40 patients referred to the eye clinic of Ahvaz Imam Khomeini hospital with non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy and clinically significant macular edema were included. Coherence optical tomography (OCT) is performed to determine the retinal thickness. The visual acuity and intraocular pressure were measured. Patients with status of macular edema treatment with macular photocoagulation (MPC) or intravitreal Bevacizumab injection and then were randomized two groups; A group received three Doxium capsule daily and the second group received placebo daily for three months
Results:
In this study 40 patients (71 eyes) were studied in two groups. Twenty-two patients (55%) were male and 18 patients (45%) were female. The mean macular thickness before treatment in the group treated with Doxium of 340 micrometers to 257 micrometers was reduced after treatment (24.5%). Macular thickness in the placebo-treated group before treatment was 336 mm, which was reduced after treatment with 263 micro meters (21.5%). Macular thickness decreased after treatment in both groups, but the mean central macular thickness between the 2 groups was not difference significant (P>0.05).
Conclusion:
In this study efficacy of Doxium with macular laser therapy or intravitreal Bevacizumab injection on central macular thickness, visual acuity and intraocular pressure were measured. Several reports have been published on the effect of oral Doxium in patients with diabetic retinopathy. In this study, no significant differences were found between Doxium and placebo.
