Purpose:
To evaluate the result of overcorrecting minus lens therapy for treatment of children with intermittent exotropia.
Methods:
Thirty five children (21 male and 14 female) with 10-35 prism (mean 22.5 ∆) intermittent exotropia and mean age of 11 years (4-17 years) were treated with overcorrecting 1.25-2.5 Diopters minus lens therapy. Treatment was instigated with the minimum minus lens required to achieve control of the manifest deviation.
Results:
Of these 35 children, 24 cases (68.5%) achieved a successful outcome and a quantitative decrease in their angle of deviation; and 10 cases (28.5%) had an inadequate improvement. The results were maintained for at least 1 year follow-up. In one child (about 3%) intermittent exotropia shifted to esotropia (high AC/A ratio) and treatment inevitably ceased.
Conclusion:
These data suggest that overminus therapy is a primary useful method to control intermittent exotropia, but initial refractive errors, age, treatment period and overcorrection magnitude should be considered.
