Purpose:
To evaluate the changes in visual field of patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment after successful scleral buckling surgery.
Methods:
In this prospective case series, patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment who underwent scleral buckling surgery sere included. Before surgery and one and three months after that humphrey visual field perimetry was performed. The changes in mean deviation, pattern standard deviation, and probability symbols were evaluated.
Results:
Thirteen eyes of 13 patients with a mean age of 36.6±19.8 years were included. There were 4 subtotal and 9 total retinal detachments. Compared to the preoperative values, mean of best corrected visual acuity, mean deviation, pattern standard deviation, and probability symbols were improved significantly at both one and 3 months after surgery. The changes were not statistically significant between one and three-month measurements after surgery. At 3 months visit, the visual field was normal in 2 eyes (15.3%).
Conclusion:
Maximum improvement in visual field of patients occurred within one month after surgery. At 3 months, visual field was outside normal limits in the majority of eyes.
