Purpose:
To evaluate the changes in lower tear meniscus after 45 minutes of computer operation in mild dry eye subjects
Methods:
39 subjects (age 21.2 ± 2.4 years), with mild dry eye (mean TBUT 7.6 sec ± 3.6), were enrolled in this study. The lower tear meniscus height and area (TMH, TMA) of the right eye was captured by SOCT before and after 45 minutes of reading task at computer stations. The same procedure was performed after the insertion of Soft CL (58% water content).
Results:
The mean TMH and TMA pre and post computer tasks were 283.61 ± 158.86 µm, 0.02874± 0.030885mm2, 297.62 ±129.26 µm , 0.03636 ± 0.32479 mm2 respectively. After SCL insertion, The mean TMH and TMA pre and post computer task were 231.56 ± 66.08 µm, 0.02041±0.012384 mm2, 213.03 ±56.5 µm, 0.01803 ± 0.007407 mm2, respectively. Repeated measures analysis of variance showed that changes in TMH (P=0.696) and TMA (P=0.974) after computer task, were not statistically significant, while insertion of SCL had reduced the TMH and TMA significantly (P<0.001).
Conclusion:
Reading task on the computer monitor does not alter the lower tear meniscus. The evaluation of tear film stability at inferior cornea must be considered in the future studies.
