Purpose:
To report the structural changes of the retina after macular hole surgery.
Methods:
A prospective non-comparative review of a consecutive series of 20 patients (20 eyes) who underwent pars plana vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane removal for macular hole repair. Retinal OCT before and 1 and 6 months after operation were performed in all cases for macular structure measurement. The main outcome measures were postoperative visual acuity, macular hole status, central and average thickness changes of macula.
Results:
There was no statistically significant improvement of postoperative visual acuity after 6 months (P = 0.217). The macular hole was closed in 19 eyes (95%) at the end of 6 months follow-up. Macular structure anatomy returns to normal after successful surgery at the last follow up with statistically significant reduction of average and central macular thickness (P < 0.001).
Conclusion:
Despite the great result of anatomical success rate after macular hole surgery with membrane peeling, there was no statistically significant improvement of postoperative visual acuity after 6 months. This may result of irreversible damage of macula in course of the disease.
