Purpose:
A common cause of blindness worldwide is glaucoma. Identifying the risk factors of glaucomatous optic neuropathy (GON), and modelling the GON development in light of known risk factors, have developed screening strategies which may be helpful for early diagnosis of high risk individuals.
Methods:
Attempts to identify unrecognized risk factors of GON development, and complete the modelling of the GON development have been continueing.
Results:
In this paper, it was hypothesised that GON results from the mechanical fatigue effect of the radial TS on the optic nerve head (ONH), which is directly influenced by age, maximum and minimum intraocular pressure (IOP), the amplitude of IOP fluctuations, the ONH geometry, the scleral thickness and biomechanical properties particularly the peripapillary sclera, and the axial length of the globe. Other risk factors such as race, and positive family history indirectly influence the mechanical fatigue of the ONH through the variables above.
Conclusion:
Based on this model, more efficient screening strategies can be developed which may be helpful for delaying the GON development and the subsequent visual field loss.
