Purpose:
To evaluate change of macular thickness after open globe injury with optical coherence tomography (OCT).
Methods:
In this cross sectional study, 17 patients who underwent repair of open globe injury, without retinal damage, were studied. Postoperatively, all patients were examined at the 1st and 3rd month by best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), dilated fundus examinations and macular OCT scans.
Results:
In all patients no signs of macular edema, macular thickening, cystic changes and other signs of cystoid macular edema (CME) were observed in OCT images and examinations. Using the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) map, there was no significant difference in macular thickness between the first and third month in all patients (P>0.05). There was no significant relationship between macular thickness and uvea or vitreous prolapse and size or site of laceration (P>0.05). BCVA also showed no significant change (P>0.05).
Conclusion:
Macular thickness had no significant change following open globe injury. It seems open globe injury solely has no effect on macular thickness.
