Purpose:
To assess the incidence of "Monofixation Syndrome" in accommodative esotropia in patients who had been treated regularly
Methods:
Consecutive patients with the diagnosis accommodative esotropia and final residual esotropia equll or less than 8 prism diopter (after wearing of full cycloplegic refrcation glass) at least 3 months after start of treatment. patients who were poorly cooperative, having deep amblyopia in one eye, having DVD and anisometropia more than 1.5 diopter excluded
For all patients, visual acuity, deviometry at near & far (with & without correction), Worth 4 dots test (at near & far), 4 prism diopter base out prism test and stereopsis (fly test) were determined. The results compared between the orthotropic patients and others
Results:
30 patients (mean age 7.3 y. o.) were selected. The results of all tests showed that in orthotropic patients, the incidence of monofixation syndrome was significantly lower than in patients with residual esotropia ≦8 prism diopter. In contrast, normal binocular vision was more common in orthotropic patients
Conclusion:
In conclusion, although the deviation ≦8 prism diopter is an accepted target angle in accommodative esotropia, but if possible (surgical or nonsurgical) we have to try to eliminate the deviation completely
