Purpose:
To investigate the clinical outcomes after complete intracorneal ring implantation for the management of keratoconus using femtosecond laser technology.
Methods:
98 keratoconic eyes from 98 patients with the mean age of 30.7±9.01 years old were included. All the participants presented with reduced visual acuity, contact lens intolerance and central corneal thickness of more than 360 µm. Complete intrastromal ring was inserted into an intrastromal pocket created by femtosecond laser. Main outcome measures were the visual, refractive, aberrometric and corneal biomechanical outcomes before implantation and at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year follow up visits.
Results:
Uncorrected and corrected visual acuity, spherical and cylindrical errors were improved 1 month after surgery (p<0.001) but no change was detected thereafter (p>0.05). Mean keratometry and corneal astigmatism were decreased 1 month after implantation (p<0.001) but no significant change was observed at 3 month or 1 year visits compared to 1 month values (p>0.05). Primary coma was decreased significantly (p=0.03) and spherical aberrations were increased significantly (p<0.001) after operation.
Conclusion:
MyoRing implantation in keratoconus is an acceptable substitute for keratoplasty in advanced keratoconus.
