Purpose:
|
To evaluate the efficacy of topical povidone-iodine (PVI) 5% to reduce conjunctiva microbial contamination
|
|
Methods:
|
Sixty one consecutive patients (61 eyes) going to undergo cataract surgery in Salamat Gharb Surgical Center were recruited. Topical PVI 5% were used in all the eyes before the surgery and remained for 15 minute before saline irrigation. Specimens were obtained before and after the application of PVI
|

Results:
|
Bacteria were isolated in 79% and 52% of eyes before and after application of PVI respectively. Overall Microbial flora reduced in all the eyes (P value≤0.0001). Sixteen (26%) culture positive eyes became negative while no negative culture eyes became positive after PVI application. Also microbial flora was reduced in 81% of culture positive eyes significantly. (P value≤0.0001)

Conclusion:
|
povidone-iodine solution has a significant effect in reducing bacterial contamination of conjunctiva.
