Purpose:
|
To evaluate the relationship between prevalence and severity of pinguecula in diabetes mellitus patients and compare with control group
|
|
Methods:
|
A total of 160 patients with DM, 12 type 1 and 148 type 2, and 160 control subjects were enrolled. The prevalence and severity of pinguecula were assessed in all subjects by grading system.
|
|
Results:
|
There were 53 (33.1%) and 111 (69.4%) persons without pinguecula in DM group and control group, respectively. There were 37 (23.1%) and 14 (8.7%) unilateral pinguecula, 70 (43.8%) and 35 (21.9%) bilateral pinguecula in DM group and control group respectively(p=0.01). There were 88 (55.1%) and 40 (25%) G1 , 77 (48.3%) and 47 (29.4%) G2 and 13 (8.2%) and 0 (0%) G3 severity in DM group and control group respectively,(p=0,001).

Conclusion:
|
Diabetes mellitus may be a risk factor for development and severity of pinguecula.
