Purpose:
To evaluate the effects of smoking on the central corneal thickness (CCT).
Methods:
In a historical chohort analytic study referred cases have been divided into two groups (cigarette smokers, and non–cigarette smokers). Laboratory tests as fasting blood sugar (FBS), blood urea nitrogen (BUN); and the blood pressure has been checked. Complete eye examination has been performed. CCT was measured by Pentacam.
Results:
511 male with average age (35.71 ±9.58) were included, as 261 persons were nonsmokers (51.1%) and 250 persons (48, 9%) were smokers. In the smoker group the consumption was 14.45±12.82 pack/year. CCT in both groups was 536.44±30.29 µm, in smoking group was 537.98±30.29 µm and in non smokers was 534.96±30.11 µm. there was no statistically significant difference between the CCT between the groups. In addition, multivariate analyses using linear regression to control for confounding effects of age and IOP on CCT have shown no significant relation between the CCT among the smokers and non smokers. (P value=0.11)
Conclusion:
It seems that cigarette smoking does not affect the CCT.
