Purpose:
A new modification for rhomboid transposition flaps is introduced in this study for reconstruction of the medial canthal region.
Methods:
Transposition of multiple flaps is used to fill large tissue defects in the medial canthal region in 22 patients referred to Farabi eye hospital for resection of malignant lesions in the medial canthal territory. Post surgical results, advantages, and drawbacks of the technique are discussed.
Results:
Between years 2010 to 2012, 22 patients, all with Basal Cell Carcinoma, proven by histopathologic study later, underwent medial canthal reconstruction with this technique. Large defects with the diameter of 1-2 cm and area of 3-4 cm2 , were sealed appropriately. Mean age of the patients was 68.2±7.5 years and mean number of flaps needed was 3.27. Patients were followed for 2 to 24 months with the mean follow up period of 8 months. None of them developed flap necrosis or other intraoperative and postoperative complications. Compared to existing flap techniques, besides the good aesthetic results, functional outcomes were also highly acceptable.
Conclusion:
Modified rhomboid transposition flap technique can be considered as an alternative method in medial canthal reconstruction with good functional and aesthetic outcomes.
