Purpose:
Comparison of the visual acuity and quality between accelerated and standard CXL in the treatment of keratoconus
Methods:
This randomized clinical trial was performed on 60 keratoconic eyes (30 eyes in each group) and the 6-month results of accelerated CXL (18mW/cm2, 5min) and standard CXL (3mW/cm2, 30min) were compared.
Results:
The mean changes of UCVA (P=0.784), BCVA (P=0.451), and MRSE (P=0.514) and the mean decrease of max- K (P=0.147) and min- K (P=0.330) did not differ significantly between the two groups. The mean corneal thickness decrease was more in the 30-minute group versus the 5-minute group (P=0.024). The mean decrease of corneal hysteresis (P=0.348) and corneal resistance factor (P=1.000) was similar and the mean decrease of the endothelial cell count did not show a significant difference (P=0.218) between the two groups. The trend of the changes of the above-mentioned indices was not significant in the two groups, except for the decreasing trends of CCT and ECC.
Conclusion:
Based on the 6-month results, visual acuity and quality of accelerated and standard CXL are similar. This study will continue to report the long-term comparative results of the two methods.
