Purpose:
Reporting a series of patients with vitreous detachment (VD) at the original fibrovascular ridge, developed after single dose of intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) for stage 3+ retinopathy of prematurity (ROP)
Methods:
The medical records of five premature infants (nine eyes) were retrospectively reviewed who developed VD after receiving IVB. Clinical courses of these eyes were described based on the medical records and RetCam fundus photography
Results:
All five patients had taken IVB as an initial treatment option. With close follow-ups, regression of extraretinal fibrovascular proliferation and plus disease were noted invariably and vessels crossed the original fibrovascular ridge into the avascular peripheral retina. In a median follow up time of nine weeks (Mean±SD; 8.2±2.3), VD both at the ridge site and posterior to it was noted in RetCam and indirect ophthalmoscopy exam of nine eyes. No obvious retinal break was noted on follow up to22weeks after injection.
Conclusion:
VD may be created following IVB injection as an initial treatment for ROP. Therefore, ROP patients who receive IVB without previous retinal photocoagulation are recommended to be closely followed for possible VD and rule out of potential retinal traction and breaks even if the disease seems to have regressed.
