Purpose:
To compare differences in modulation transform function ( MTF) between 2 standard spherical monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs), the hydrophobic acrylic Alcon SA60AT (Bausch & Lomb) and hydrophilic acrylic Rayner Superflex (620H) (Rayner)
Methods:
Sixty- eight eyes of 68 patients who have undergone phacoemulsification cataract surgery, were studied. In group 1(n=39) the hydrophobic Alcon SA60AT IOL and in group 2(n=29) the hydrophilic Rayner Superflex (620H) IOL were implanted. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at far was 20/20. MTF test was performed by OPD ScanIII (Nidek) under the natural pupil and in a mesopic condition at the first and third months after surgery.
Results:
T-test results shows that there were no differences between the 2 groups in the mean of MTF during 2 follow ups (p=0.788), but after separating between 2 IOLs, according to the repeated measure ANOVA test results: the MTF significantly increase at third months post-op.( p=0.033) Also repeated measure ANOVA results demonstrates that MTF is influenced by IOL types and refractive errors over time.(p= 0.029, p= 0.025)
Conclusion:
It seems that IOL materials and residual small defocus are 2 important factors which could influence on an optical quality of vision in pseudophakics. Although Hydrophilic IOLs provide better MTF over time, it need long term study.
