Purpose:
To assess the relationship between the alignment at week 1 and alignment at month 6 following intermittent exotropia ( IXT) surgery.
Methods:
The records of 81 patients with IXT who underwent surgery for orthophoria and had at least 6 months follow up were retrospectively reviewed. The patients were divided in to 3 groups according to their alignments, orthphoric ( XT≤10 to ET ≤ 5 pd) ,under corrected ( XT>10 ) and over corrected ( ET> 5) at 1 week and 6 months postoperatively.
Results:
The success rates of week 1, month 6 and last visit postoperative follow up were 75.3%, 76.5% and 67.9 % respectively. From 61 patients who were orthophoric at week 1, 51 (83.6%) patients preserved their initial alignment at month 6 (p=.0.024 ). Recurrent XT were seen in 8 (13.1%) of orthophoric and no one of over corrected patients at 6 months.
Conclusion:
Early postoperative alignment of IXT at week 1 can be considered as a predictor of alignment at month 6. Recurrent XT is seen in orthophoric group more than over corrected group at 6 months follow up.
