Purpose:
find the cure rate of initial probing for congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNLDO) and to identify factors producing the failure rate in old age
Methods:
in a retrospective interventional case series study, 100 eyes of 92 patients aged 9-48m with CNLDO underwent probing under general anesthesia.
According the intraperative results of probing, CNLDO categorized in two groups.1-membranous obstruction at the end of NLD 2-complex obstruction at canaliculus, lacrimal sac and NLD. According the age of probing, patient categorized into 3 groups.1: under 12month,2:12-24 M,3;over 24M . Success rate was defied as successful irrigation of NLD intraoperatively and absence of lacrimation and discharge at 1week, one, three and six months postoperatively
Results:
the average ages of patient & probing were 47.35+_25.59 and 17.32+_7.85 months respectively. Membranous obstruction accounts for 72% of patient and remainder had complex type.the success rate of surgery after 6m in membranous group was 91% and in complex group was 52%. There is significant relation between type of obstruction and opening of NLD (0.O5>p).
Conclusion:
this study showed that probing failure of probing after one year related to complexity of obstruction than the age of patient
