Purpose:
To evaluate the results of bilateral medial rectus muscle recession in improvement of the ocular alignment patients with unilateral esotropic Duane syndrome.
Methods:
: we retrospectively reviewed the records of 30 unilateral c Duane syndrome (type 1) underwent recession of both medial rectus muscles. Pre- and postsurgical deviation, angle of, abnormal head turn, and severity of globe retraction were compared and studied with spss software
Results:
30 patients with unilateral Duane syndrome (type 1) underwent recession of both medial rectus muscles. Mean age of patients was 10.5 years.12 patients were male and remainder was female. The left eye was involved in 25 of the patients. Mean preoperative esotropia was 30 prisms (25-35) that decreased 23 prisms (0-10)
Mean preoperative abnormal head turn was 35° (range, 30°-40°)that decreased ( 0°-8°). Esotropia and abnormal head turn disappeared in 80% of the patients and improved in the remaining. None of the patients developed exotropia. Globe retraction disappeared in 12 of the patients and improved in12 of patinents and not changed in remainder.
Conclusion:
Bilateral recession of medial rectus muscles has resulted in improvement of deviation, abnormal head position and globe retraction in patients with unilateral esotropic Duane Syndrome.
