Purpose:
To evaluate the anatomical and functional changes of the macula following treatment of acute post-operative endophthalmitis.
Methods:
Three months after treatment of acute post cataract surgery endophthalmitis, funduscopy was done and BCVA was determined. In patients who had clear media, OCT and multifocal ERG were performed. Contrast sensitivity was tested for eyes with BCVA better than 20/200.
Results:
Totally 32 patients were examined 3 months after treatment of acute post-operative endophthalmitis. BCVA was 20/40 or better in 28.1% of cases and in 34.4% of cases BCVA was worse than 20/200.
OCT showed that in post-endophthalmitis eyes, ERM in 22.7%, CME in 45.5% and normal macula in 31.9% of cases were presented. Significant reduction in amplitude of N1 and P1 responses in patients with severe visual loss was detected using mfERG. Significant contrast sensitivity reduction was detected in higher spatial frequencies.
Conclusion:
OCT is a useful device for diagnosis of treatable complications after treatment of endophthalmitis. The mfERG results were compatible with diffuse damage of both inner and outer retina. For evaluation of contrast sensitivity in eyes with low visual acuity, higher spatial frequencies should be tested.
