Purpose:
: To report the causative organisms, the clinical characteristics, and the visual outcomes of bleb-associated endophthalmitis in Farabi Eye Hospital
Methods:
All cases of bleb related endophthalmitis treated between 1995 and 2012 in Farabi Eye Hospital were reviewed retrospectively. The patient data – including age, sex, history of previous surgeries, visual acuities, and causative organisms were recorded.
Results:
A total of 11 eyes from 11 patients were identified. There were 7 males (63.6%) and 4 females (36.3%). Mitomycin-C (MMC) was used in 8 patients ( 0.73% ).the mean time between trabeculectomy and diagnosis of endophthalmitis was 56.05±1.06 months (Range 4 days-30 years). Final visual acuities at discharge time ranged from 20/100 to light perception (LP).Four eyes (36.3 %) were culture positive, and the most common causative organisms were Streptococcus species in 3 eyes (27.2%), gram-negative organisms in 1 eye (0.91%).
Conclusion:
Despite prompt treatment with appropriate intravitreal antibiotics, or pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) BAE still carries a poor visual prognosis.
