Purpose:
To evaluate the efficacy of topical tranexamic acid in prevention of rebleeding in childhood traumatic hyphema.
Methods:
Our study is the first report of using topical TEA in treatment of pediatric traumatic hyphema. Twenty patients aged 10 or younger were involved in this randomized clinical trial. group1 received 1mg/kg oral prednisolone plus topical tranexamic acid10%(TEA) every 6 hours for 5 days ,
group 2 received topical tranexamic acid10%(TEA) every 6 hours for 5 days without oral prednisolone.
Results:
Rate of rebleeding in our study in each group is 10% Because of equal rate in 2 groups we can conclude that topical TEA has the equal effect in decreasing rebleeding rate compared with systemic corticosteroid.
IOP rise in each group is nearly 1mmhg and no one in our study had glaucoma as a result of hyphema . We had no significant systemic or ocular side effect in 2 groups who had received topical TEA.
Conclusion:
It seems that we could use topical TEA ,as a safe and effective drug , instead of systemic prednisolone in pediatric traumatic hyphema.
