Purpose:
To assess and compare the clinical benefit and efficacy of topical ketorolac and diclofenac in visual outcomes and prevention of cystoid macular edema (CME) after uneventful cataract surgery.
Methods:
87 patients with senile cataracts were randomly assigned to 3 different groups. In addition to the routine drops after the cataract surgery, patients in group 1 received ketorolac and in group 2 received diclofenac drops. The 3rd group received just the routine treatment. Visual outcomes and also central foveal thickness (CFT), total macular volume (TMV) and average macular thickness (AMT) were assessed before and 1 and 3 months after the surgery.
Results:
One month after the surgery the BSCVA was significantly better in the two NSAIDs groups comparing to the controls (p=0.031). At the 3rd month, this difference was not significant. There was not any significant difference in retinal parameters at any time between the 3 groups. In diabetic patients, at 1 month TMV was significantly lower.
Conclusion:
Topical NSAIDs are effective in prevention of BSCVA drop between the early post-operative days and 1 month after the surgery. They can not cause any change in the retinal parameters in routine patients. In diabetic patients they probably can reduce the rate of CME.
