Purpose:
to evaluate aphakic refraction technique for secondary intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation in children using 2 existing formulas proposed by lanchulev and leccisotti.
Methods:
autorefraction was performed on 33 aphakic eyes(due to previous congenital cataract surgery) of children between 3-14 years old, before secondary IOL implantation,to calculate preoperative aphakic spherical equivalent(SE).secondary IOL with power calculated by conventional formulas was implanted for all cases.in each eye, postoperative refraction was obtained.the IOL power that would have achieved target refraction was calculated retrospectively.an IOL difference was calculated by subtracting this target refraction from IOL power calculated by the 2 formulas using aphakic SE.
Results:
After surgery,40% of eyes were within -1.00 to +1.00 diopters (mean -0.9 D myopia).Lanchulev formula in all eyes (except one eye) and leccisotti formula in all eyes led to myopia (mean -4.3 D myopia for lanchulev and -8.70 D for leccisotti).with reduction the coefficient of lanchulev formula, alternative formula was derived that was comparable with conventional formulas (mean -0.5D myopia).
Conclusion:
although Based on previous studies ,lanchulev and leccissoti formulas are relatively reliable in adults ,but based on our study in children both formulas lead to significant postoperative myopia.but the new alternative formula reported in our study is comparable with conventional formulas in children
