Purpose:
To evaluate outcomes of femtosecond laser astigmatic keratotomy (AK) in the treatment of high astigmatism
Methods:
A retrospective review was performed on fourteen eyes of eleven patients who underwent AK for correction of astigmatism error. The operation was performed using a femtosecond laser (FEMTEC R, Technolas Perfect Vision, GmbH, Heidelberg, Germany) to create paired arcuate cuts. Target values were refraction, Uncorrected Visual Acuity (UCVA) and Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA). Statistical analysis was performed to detect significances between follow up visits using student's T test.
Results:
The mean patient age was 41 years (range 27-62 years). Mean preoperative UCVA (logMAR) was 1.1 that significantly improved after operation in 3 and 6 month follow up periods (p<0.001). Mean cylinder was -8.35 D (range -12.5 to -2.25 D) preoperatively that changed to -3.19 D (-9.5 to -0.25 D) 6 month after operation.
Conclusion:
Astigmatic keratotomy using femtosecond laser is effective in reducing corneal astigmatism and seems valuable surgical technique for refractive errors treatment specially for patients with high astigmatism error who have problem to wear glasses.
