Purpose:
• To investigate the pattern of uveitis in the pediatric age group in a referral care center in south Iran.
Methods:
• In a retrospective chart review study, all uveitis patients below 18 years, referred to the uveitis referral clinic at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Shiraz, Iran during the last 5 years, from 2007 to 2011 included in the study. Exclusion criteria were patients with postoperative endophthalmitis, post-surgery uveitis or trauma. Clinical manifestations of uveitis were described.
Results:
• The most common type of uveitis was acute non-granulomatous anterior uveitis (52%), followed by intermediate uveitis (29%), panuveitis (3%), and posterior uveitis (16%). Non-infectious immune related uveitis accounted in 79% of cases and infectious etiologies in remaining 21% of cases.
Conclusion:
• The most common cause of childhood-onset uveitis was idiopathic acute non-granolomatous anterior uveitis, followed by intermediate uveitis, posterior uveitis, and panuveitis. Infectious etiologies were uncommon. The diagnosis of intermediate cases had paramount importance and challenging in evaluating the childhood uveitis patients.
