Purpose:
To compare visual and refractive outcomes after LASIK with Personalized Treatment Advanced (PTA) algorithm versus standard Tissue Saving (TS) algorithm.
Methods:
In this clinical trial, 60 eyes of 30 patients (mean age was 29 ± 5.42 years) underwent myopic LASIK using the Technolas 217z excimer system. After preoperative evaluation, one eye of each patient randomly had undergone customized LASIK with Zyoptix PTA algorithm (PTA group) while standard Tissue Saving (TS) algorithm was used for fellow eye (TS group). Visual acuity, refraction and higher-order aberrations (HOAs) were compared between two groups 6 months postoperatively.
Results:
the mean preoperative spherical equivalent (SE) was -3.74 ± 1.68 (D) in PTA group and -3.62 ± 1.86 (D) in TS group, respectively. Preoperatively, there were not significant differences between two groups in SE refraction (p =0.795), corneal thickness (p =0.764) and HOAs (p =0.443). Postoperatively, 90% of all eyes in the PTA group and 83.3% of eyes in the TS group were within ± 0.50 D. HOAs increased in the two groups. There were not statistically significant differences in all visual outcomes between the two groups.
Conclusion:
Despite theoretical advantages of customized LASIK, there was no significant difference between any measured outcomes in our study between 2 groups. Still further work is needed to optimize the algorithms to correct HOAs.
