Purpose:
To compare visual outcomes of myopic refractive surgery, using Tissue Saving Algorithm (TS) by Technolas 217z100, with Aberration Smart Ablation (SA) by MEL 80 excimer laser
Methods:
In this prospective study, 45 myopic patients (90 eyes) were treated with Femto-LASIK. For each patient, one eye was randomly treated with optimized Smart Ablation profile (SA group) by MEL 80 excimer laser and the other eye was treated with Tissue Saving algorithm (TS group) by Technolas 217 excimer laser. Outcome measures were uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuities (UDVA & CDVA), manifest refraction, higher-order aberrations (HOAs) and contrast sensitivity at 12 months after surgery.
Results:
At 12 months, mean UDVA was -0.02+/-0.08 LogMAR for TS group and -0.02+/-0.09 LogMAR for SA group (P=0.91). Mean postoperative manifest refractive spherical equivalent (MRSE) was -0.24+/-0.4 diopters (D) for TS group and -0.26+/-0.44 D for SA group (P=0.82). 42/45 (93.3%) of TS eyes and 41/45 (91.1%) Of the SA eyes were within +/-0.5 D of target refraction. No patient lost any line of CDVA in either group. There was no statistically significant difference between groups in contrast sensitivity and changes in higher order aberrations (HOAs)
Conclusion:
In this contralateral eye study there were no differences in any measured outcome parameters between optimized and tissue saving algorithms for treatment of myopic eyes.
