Purpose:
To compare visual and refractive outcomes after hyperopic astigmatism treatment between Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) and Laser In Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK)
Methods:
This prospective clinical trial evaluated 30 eyes of 15 consecutive patients with hyperopia and astigmatism. 16 eyes (group1) receiving LASIK and 14 eyes (group 2) receiving PRK using Technolas excimer laser system. Visual outcomes, higher-order aberrations (HOAs) and patient’s satisfaction were compared between groups 6 months postoperatively.
Results:
Preoperatively there were no significant differences between two groups in refraction, UDVA, CDVA, and HOAs. After 6 months efficacy index was o.956 ± 0.38 in LASIK group and 0.996 ± 0.19 in PRK group. Safety index was 1.18 ± 0.22 in LASIK group and 1.20 ±0.13 in PRK group. However PRK associated with better visual outcomes, but increase in HOAs in PRK group was greater than LASIK group, and the level of satisfaction after LASIK was relatively higher. Although all differences were not statistically significant.
Conclusion:
However PRK associated with better visual outcomes, but the level of satisfaction after LASIK was relatively higher. LASIK and PRK were both safe and effective in treating moderate hyperopia and astigmatism.
