Purpose:
To detect the regions of non-perfusion in human retina a confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope (cSLO) was adapted to provide spectral imaging of the fundus using a new dual combination of red (670nm) and near infrared (810nm) wavelengths.
Methods:
The reproducibility of the measurements of reflected light from the fundus using the prototype cSLO at University of Aberdeen was determined and analysed to see if quantitative measurements of the reflectivity of tissue permit assessment of the oxygen perfusion of tissue. An image processing technique was designed to minimize the errors by illumination correction in retina. Retinal images were taken from healthy and diabetic retinopathy (DR) eyes using a confocal aperture of 100 µm. A protocol was provided to run for fundus imaging of DR patients. Using MATLAB 7.1, our algorithm was written to produce the ratio image (RI) of Red(670)/IR(810) as oxygen saturation index, and detect non-perfused regions on DR Retina.
Results:
The capability of the new technique to discriminate the oxygenation levels of retina was demonstrated and showed good promise in discrimination between perfused and non-perfused retina.
Conclusion:
We achieved a new spectral imaging technique using two wavelengths which developed to detect perfusion changes in retina with no dye injection or eye drops.
