Purpose:

The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether or not halothane gas, used to calm children down during procedures like electroretinogram test, effect the results of the test. Hypotension and oxygen saturation reduction are known side effects of this drug on children which might have an effect on test results.

Methods:

In this cross-sectional descriptive study, 25 people had halothane sedation as experimental group and 25 did not have halothane sedation as control group. Demographic information and patient history was taken with a questionnaire. Physical exam was performed and the results were noted. Then ERG test was carried out and the results were analyzed with SPSS.

Results:

The difference of voltage, time delay and mean of voltage and time delay were compared in the experimental and control group. According to independent T-test there was no significant relation between voltage differences in the two group (P>0.05) In addition, nor was a significant relation between time delay differences.

Conclusion:

The results of this study indicates that halothane gas does not have significant effects on the children’s electroretinogram. The other studies performed on the matter support this idea and have shown that the effect of this gas on children’s ERG is around 0.03%.
